Basics of energy generation through wind power

Solar energy describes the use of solar radiation to generate energy. It is one of the most important renewable energy sources and can be used in a variety of ways. The two main technologies for harnessing solar energy are solar thermal and photovoltaics. Both technologies serve different purposes and operate according to different principles.

Photovoltaics

Photovoltaics (PV) refers to the direct conversion of sunlight into electrical power. This occurs through the photovoltaic effect, which occurs in special semiconductor materials such as silicon. Photovoltaic systems consist of solar modules containing multiple interconnected solar cells. The solar cells in the modules are made of semiconductor materials that release electrons when hit by sunlight. This movement of electrons generates electrical power, which can then be used directly, stored, or fed into the power grid. Photovoltaic systems come in a variety of sizes, from small balcony systems to larger rooftop systems for self-consumption to large-scale solar farms that generate electricity for grid feed-in. The technology has made significant advances in both cell efficiency and cost in recent decades, making photovoltaics one of the most cost-effective forms of electricity generation. Both solar thermal and photovoltaics offer numerous advantages, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and harnessing a virtually inexhaustible energy source. However, their output fluctuates greatly with the seasons. In summer, conditions are optimal, while in winter, shorter days and lower sun angles reduce the efficiency of this form of energy generation.
